15 phrases with pronunciation

Friends first

เพื่อน is the root of a whole family of friend-words — Thai just adds what you share: work, a wall, a childhood.

  1. เพื่อน phuean Friend
  2. เพื่อนสนิท phuean sanit Close friend
  3. เพื่อนร่วมงาน phuean ruam ngan Coworker
  4. เพื่อนบ้าน phuean ban Neighbor

Polite particles

Men end sentences with ครับ (khráp), women with ค่ะ (khâ). In the sweet phrases below you'll see the particles do real work — they mark who is speaking.

Single, taken, engaged

แฟน covers boyfriend and girlfriend alike — Thai keeps romance gender-neutral, and the follow-up question is practically a national icebreaker.

  1. แฟน faen Boyfriend or girlfriend

Gender-neutral — one word for any romantic partner.

  2. คุณมีแฟนหรือยัง khun mi faen rue yang Do you have a partner yet?
  3. โสด sot Single
  4. แต่งงานแล้ว taengngan laeo Married
  5. คู่ครอง khu khrong Life partner

Sweet nothings

รัก is a weighty word in Thai — but คิดถึง (I miss you) flows freely, in texts, calls, and long-distance friendships.

  1. รัก rak To love
  2. ชอบ chop To like
  3. คิดถึง khitthung To miss someone
  4. ผมรักคุณมากที่สุดครับ phǒm rak khun mak thi sut khrap I love you the most

Male speaker — ผม plus ครับ (khráp). A woman says ฉัน...ค่ะ (khâ).

  5. ฉันคิดถึงคุณมากค่ะ chan khitthung khun mak kha I miss you very much

    Female speaker — ฉัน plus ค่ะ (khâ). A man says ผม...ครับ (khráp).

  6. ความรักทำให้คนเปลี่ยนไป khwamrak tham hai khon plian pai Love makes people change

Match the pronoun to yourself

In full sentences your gender shows twice: men say ผม (phǒm) and end with ครับ, women say ฉัน (chǎn) and end with ค่ะ. Swap both together and every line below is yours.

In real life: the partner question

You (male)

คุณมีแฟนหรือยัง khun mi faen rue yang

Do you have a partner yet?

Mali

ฉันยังโสดอยู่ค่ะ chan yang sot yu kha

I'm still single.
