Essential Japanese Greetings
First impressions run on greetings. This guide covers 15 Japanese greetings — from casual hellos to polite goodbyes — each with romanization, a sounds-like hint and example sentences you can use immediately.
Hello by the clock
Japanese swaps its hello as the day goes on. Use the right one and you instantly sound like you know what you're doing.
-
おはようございます ohayou gozaimasu Good morning (polite)
-
こんにちは konnichiwa Hello, good afternoon
-
こんばんは konbanwa Good evening
When to switch
おはようございます until mid-morning, こんにちは through the afternoon, こんばんは after dusk. With friends, morning shortens to a breezy おはよう — drop ございます and the formality drops with it.
First meetings and checking in
はじめまして is reserved for the very first time you meet someone — after that, you graduate to asking how they are.
-
はじめまして hajimemashite Nice to meet you
-
はじめまして、よろしくおねがいします。 hajimemashite, yoroshiku onegaishimasu Nice to meet you, please treat me well
The full self-introduction set phrase — say it after giving your name.
-
おげんきですか ogenki desu ka How are you?
-
げんきです genki desu I'm fine
Magic words
Thanks, sorry and everything in between. Japan runs on these five — you'll hear them dozens of times a day.
-
ありがとう arigatou Thank you (casual)
-
どういたしまして douitashimashite You're welcome
-
すみません sumimasen Excuse me, sorry
-
ごめんなさい gomen nasai I'm sorry
-
しつれいします shitsurei shimasu Pardon me (entering or leaving)
The Swiss-army word
すみません covers "excuse me", "sorry" and even "thank you" when someone goes out of their way for you. When in doubt, say すみません — it is never wrong.
Goodbyes
Match the goodbye to the situation: casual for friends you'll see soon, formal for real partings, and one just for bedtime.
-
またね mata ne See you later
-
さようなら sayounara Goodbye
More final than the English word — for everyday partings, またね is the natural choice.
-
おやすみなさい oyasuminasai Good night
In real life: meeting someone for the first time
こんにちは konnichiwa
Hello.
はじめまして、たなかです。 hajimemashite, Tanaka desu
Nice to meet you, I'm Tanaka.
はじめまして、よろしくおねがいします。 hajimemashite, yoroshiku onegaishimasu
Nice to meet you — please treat me well.
ようこそにほんへ。 youkoso nihon e
Welcome to Japan.

Frequently asked questions
How do I greet someone politely in Japanese?
Match the greeting to the situation: the list above runs from everyday hellos to time-specific and formal greetings. When in doubt, choose the more polite option — it is never rude to be too respectful.
How do I pronounce these Japanese phrases?
Every phrase comes with romanization — the phrase spelled out in Latin letters. Read it out loud slowly, then work up to the rhythm of the full phrase. Native speakers care far more about confidence and context than perfect pronunciation.
What is the best way to memorize these phrases?
Little and often beats cramming. Review a handful of phrases a day, say them out loud, and revisit them tomorrow. The Pretalk app turns lists like this one into bite-size lessons with spaced review, so the phrases actually stick.
